The
Great Outdoors once featured members of ...Nous Non Plus (né Les
Sans Culottes), Calamine and
Semi-Gloss. Dan Crane, the bands writer, guitarist and vocalist played music in NYC for about seven years in everything from French, to
Hawaiian to a punk rock Klezmer band. His band, The Great Outdoors is decidedly
not French -- nor does it pretend to be. In addition to Crane, the band featured
former Calamine band-mate Dave Jargowsky on drums and Verena Weisendanger (Semi-Gloss,
Nous Non Plus) as co-vocalist. Now the band exists as a solo project and "occasional ad hoc group situation."
Crane was also a six-year veteran bassist/guitarist with the faux-French 60s pop/garage band Les Sans Culottes (now know as ...Nous Non Plus), and used to play guitar and sing with the Indie-Pop group, Calamine, whose claim to fame is the theme song for Cartoon Networks cult hit, Sea Lab 2021. As a solo boy, he's played shows at Petes Candy Store, The Living Room, and Luna Lounge in New York with friends including singer/photographer Brooke Williams and Verena.
In 2004, Crane produced a track and worked as Music Consultant for a film titled November, starring Courtney Cox. Check out the track here.
He also wrote, recorded and sang the music for Amy Barret's short, The Third Date starring Sandra Bernhard, Sarah Clarke and Xander Berkeley. Check out the closing credits track here.
Now...Crane lives in NYC where he just completed a book about his experience as the competitive air guitarist, Björn Türoque.
He has also composed all the original music for the documentary, AIR GUITAR NATION, which has screened at numerous festivals around the world and won the audience award at 2006's SXSW Film Festival.
